Aphasia is an acquired communication disorder affecting one’s ability to use language in the forms of speech, writing, reading, and listening. Imagine knowing exactly what you want to say without being able to get it out. Aphasia does not impact intelligence or memory.
At The Aphasia Project (TAP), they empower individuals with aphasia, their families, and the broader community by providing lifelong support, education, and resources to strengthen communication, build confidence, and foster meaningful connections for fully integrated lives.
We were delighted to receive the following letter from them after being able to provide grant funding.
On behalf of The Aphasia Project (TAP), we are so grateful for the Murgitroyd Foundation’s support last year. Your grant directly funded the professional time of our licensed speech- language pathologists (“Group Leaders”), making it possible to provide more than 60 hours of conversation-based programming for individuals with aphasia.
The impact of your generosity has been remarkable. In 2024, The Aphasia Project served 66% more clients and delivered 75% more program hours than the year before. This growth continues into 2025, with participation already up an additional 15%. Each new participant represents another family gaining the communication support, connection, and confidence they need after a life-changing diagnosis. To reflect this growth and our expanding reach, we reintroduced ourselves as The Aphasia Project (formerly Triangle Aphasia Project Unlimited), with a refreshed name and mission to more clearly communicate who we are and what we do.
His words echo the many testimonials we receive, including this recent reflection from a caregiver:
“The idea of being far from the support of family and friends was very concerning to us. When we discovered TAP, those fears and concerns went away and we became confident in our decision. We were both welcomed and accepted so warmly by the TAP staff and clients. We have never met a more welcoming, positive and upbeat group of people before. It gives us the energy and motivation to keep working hard every day. The amount of stimulation that the TAP sessions provide to [her] is invaluable. One of my favorite parts of the day is the drive home from a TAP session when [she] gives me the rundown of the things she enjoyed about the session. The words flow from her brain to her mouth with relative ease. Her spirits and speech have improved tremendously since joining TAP last October. Having new friends who are experiencing the same challenges with aphasia has helped [her] understand that she is not alone on this journey. We are privileged to be part of the TAP family. Thank you so much for everything you and the staff do every day to make TAP a reality. You are all doing vitally important work that is making a difference in people’s lives.”
On behalf of our clients, caregivers, and staff, thank you for making such a difference.
